Turbines near Lowville

My wife and I are heading to visit her parents near Utica, NY and I remember hearing about a big wind turbine farm near Lowville. Even though we've driven by for years, I've never stopped to check it out. This time, we're bringing my teenage nephew, who's really interested in renewable energy, so it seems like a great opportunity. Is it possible to get close enough to see the turbines up close or is the area mostly private property? I want to make sure we don't just end up stuck on a dirt road looking through a fence.

It's definitely an impressive sight and it's nice that you're taking your nephew with you!
You can get pretty close on the public roads that run through the area, and there should be good viewing points via routes 12 and 177.
Just be sure to stick to the paved roads and don't try to enter any private property or access roads.
Not only is it trespassing, but it's also a big safety risk as there's a lot of large equipment and moving parts on site that you don't want to get near.

Thanks for confirming it's Maple Ridge! We're planning to swing through Lowville on Saturday afternoon, so I'll map out a route using Routes 12 and 177, as you mentioned. My nephew's been reading up on turbine specs, so even seeing them from the roadside should make an impression. We'll stick to the paved roads and avoid getting too close to any active equipment. Look for small gravel turnouts or wider shoulders near the turbines. They’re usually marked with signs for scenic views or farm access. Your nephew will definitely get a good look from there without risking safety.
