Just picked up a November 1929 Aermotor parts list and noticed that 3 parts we usually associate with the 702 model actually show up here, 6 years earlier, with part numbers starting in 6__, which means they were likely introduced with the 602. I checked several 702 ads and these parts arent mentioned, so it looks like they first appeared in late 602s. I've seen plenty of original 10' B602s with these parts still intact, i think likely because they run slower and werent rebuilt like most 8' mills. Anyone here knows the three parts i'm talking about?

That's a fantastic bit of research connecting the part numbers. You have to be talking about the enclosed oil bonnet and the updated pitman arms that made the new self oiling system possible. Does your parts list happen to show a specific part number for the hub's oil collector felt?

My guess would be the enclosed bonnet, the pitman arm with oil grooves, and maybe that updated spring washer setup. Those showed up right before the full 702 redesign, if I remember right.

Thanks, glad the research helped! The parts list i have doesnt clearly show a part number specifically for the hub's oil collector felt . Do you know if that part is usually included with the bonnet assembly, or is it ordered separately?

The hub oil felt is a separate part and not included with the bonnet assembly. It's located inside the wheel hub itself, where it helps direct the returning oil and prevent leaks out the front.

Interestingly, your 1929 list doesn't show a number for it. My guess is that Aermotor may have considered it an integral part of the hub assembly at the time and didn't list it as a separate service item yet. In later catalogs it has its own listing. The modern replacement part number for it is typically 654A.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes sense about the hub oil felt being separate. Do you happen to know when Aermotor started listing it separately in their catalogs? Im curious if there's a specific year or edition where it first appears as its own part

I've checked a few catalog scans and parts lists from the late 1930s and early 1940s. The first time I saw the hub oil felt listed on its own, usually as 654A, was around 1943. Before then, it looks like Aermotor included it as part of the hub assembly, which could be why your 1929 list doesn't mention it separately. Listing internal service parts on their own became more common after the 702 model came out and field repairs increased. Have you had a chance to compare your 1929 list with the 1938 or 1940 versions? If you're still looking through the catalog timeline, I'd be curious if any pre-1943 sheets mention the felt in a footnote or diagram, even if they don't give it a number. This could help us figure out when they started treating it as a separate part.

That’s some really detailed digging, @s0mmnus91. From what I’ve seen, Aermotor started listing the hub oil felt separately around the early 1940s. 1943 seems to be the first catalog that consistently shows it as part 654A. Anything before that, like your 1929 list, usually had it assumed as part of the hub assembly itself rather than a standalone service item. Have you had a chance to peek at the late ’30s catalogs to see if it pops up in diagrams or footnotes?
